Did the “T” in LGBT Relocate to WTF While I Was Sleeping?

Someone in an LGBT group used the word “tranny” on a Facebook post recently and nobody said anything until I posted the following:

Uh, “tranny?” That is a horrible slur. It’s l-g-b-T, remember? Dehumanizing transgender people is worse than what NOM does, because WE KNOW BETTER.

People sometimes make jokes because they’re uncomfortable and don’t understand; I know I did. Here is the link to the first post in my blog that goes over some basic transgender issues; anyone who expects NOM people to learn and grow should be willing to do the same themselves.  https://transcister.wordpress.com/2012/05/27/being-transgender-1-7-2/

Still, NOBODY commented and only 1 person “liked” my response.  THIS WAS AN LGBT GROUP THAT SUPPOSEDLY ADVOCATES FOR LGBT PEOPLE.  What’s worse is that the guy who wrote this is a member of 2 oppressed groups himself, one of which is sexual orientation.  W-T-F?

Others in my Facebook advocacy groups have used that word or written other transphobic remarks and I have responded similarly (probably more tactfully, as I cared more about remaining in those groups) and in each case I received an apology and an explanation that the person didn’t know any better.  And that’s okay if someone learns something.  Some of these individuals also read some of my blog posts, which is better than okay.

I know, I know, those of you who are trans* have lived with this kind of nonsense your entire lives.  IT IS UNACCEPTABLE.  Well, at least I responded in such a way as to educate, leaving the door open for questions—from anyone—now or in the future.  You don’t want to know what I wanted to say to him! 😉
